Boy George was right. “You’re really going to get it.” A year ago, in the dappled green of the well-lit telly jungle, the lead singer of Culture Club uttered those words to the former secretary of state for health and social care. And he has been getting it ever since.

Britain is a divided country. Angry protests on the streets. Angrier abuse online. Where to find solace and connection? The Queen? Gone. Armistice Day? Too march-y. The church? Too paedo-y.

Watching the Covid inquiry grind on, nobody there agrees on anything. Except maybe one thing. Everyone, and I mean everyone, loathes Matt Hancock. From Cummings to councillors, civil servants to scientists, politicians to police chiefs — they might all hate each other to varying
