Q: I’m fed up with losing key people at super-busy times to training sessions of dubious value that they organised months ago. Should I just say they can’t go?

A: You are right to be a bit sceptical. I took part in a laughing yoga course once: a bunch of strangers laughing together in a dark room. I have also done highly theoretical training programmes with grids and matrices that nobody could decipher.

But I would not jump to the conclusion that all management development and training is pointless. In fact, I am sorry to burst your bubble here, it may be that you are part of the problem.
