Within ice, where the risk of freezing is considerable, no animal is expected to survive. However, one species of sea anemone proves to be the exception, having recently been found in large numbers within the Ross Ice Shelf.
Previously unused shipping routes are experiencing a large increase in traffic, resulting in increased risk to marine mammal species. These routes have only recently been utilised by shipping transport due to the recent disappearance of sea ice which previously caused them to be blocked.
You may be delighted to hear that there is an area on Earth that remains un-spoilt by humans, which in this day and age, is incredibly rare. Many ecosystems have in some way, been imprinted on by humans and so news of a hidden, ‘untouched’ lake lying beneath the Antarctica ice sheet is extremely welcome. Lake Vostok lies beneath 4km of ice and has been secluded from the rest of the planet for over 20 million years.
